Happy CPI Day?
Ahead of this morning’s inflation data markets ended yesterday’s session mixed. It was a listless session with some underperformance of small/mid-cap stocks and the growth verse value factor. Chair Powell’s testimony was innocuous with his messaging largely in line with his previous commentary. There will be an encore performance today before the house where Chair Powell will surely be grilled on comments from President Trump today that “Interest rates need to be lowered” which didn’t age so well after this morning’s data. Ahead of the data global markets were mostly higher overnight while US futures had traded on either side of unchanged. However, this morning’s inflation data came in hot, and futures have moved sharply lower. S&P futures are down ~1% testing the 50d moving average while the Russell 2k is off >1.5%. Treasury yields are up 7-10bps across the curve.
